Mercy slept on the porch swing getting up bright and early to make Ms. Warburton breakfast. The screen door screeched as Olivia stepped out onto the well-worn deck boards. Maxime pushed his way past making a bee line for the nearest tree. “Good morning sleeping beauty. It’s about time you got up. I put some fresh water in your wash stand there.” Mercy said cheerfully. “Thanks… are you always so god damned cheerful in the morning?” Olivia asked. Mercy laughed at her gruffness. “Sit down I made you breakfast.” Mercy said pointing to a nearby chair. “Thanks for staying all night. I wouldn’t have gone to the hospital if it hadn’t been for you.” Olivia said squinting her eyes at Mercy. “You’re welcome. It’s the least a grand-daughter could do.” Mercy said winking at the older woman.

Olivia smiled. “I almost cracked up when you told the EMT that.” Olivia giggled. “The doctor said you have to change your diet. I hope you like pancakes.” Mercy said. “Damn doctors. They never let you have any fun. I want bacon!” Olivia said. “Sorry no bacon but we do have bacon flavored syrup.” Mercy said displaying the bottle like it was a prize on a game show. Maxime moved into position between the two women in case a morsel should fall his way. “Where did all this food come from?” Olivia asked. “Oh Michelle brought fresh strawberries from her garden along with the pancake mix, syrup and juice.” Mercy said. “Hmph.” Olivia grunted. “It looks like we’re going to take care of you whether you like it or not.” Mercy said. “Young lady one day you’re going to realize that most people are selfish self-serving creatures. You can’t depend on them. The sooner you get that through your head the better.” Ms. Warburton said.

Mercy flipped the pancakes putting the fully cooked ones onto a nearby plate. “I hope you’re wrong Ms. Warburton. I like to think most people are good. They just get caught up in their lives.” Mercy replied. She handed a plate to her friend and offered syrup and fresh fruit. The two started eating. “Is that what you think because your kids didn’t come to see you?” Mercy asked. “I spent more than twenty years looking after my children and catering to their every whim. Nine times out of ten my husband and I went without so they could have something and most times they weren’t even grateful. They’re grown now and have kids of their own. Hopefully they are learning the same lesson with them.” Olivia said smirking.

Mercy wiped syrup off her chin with the back of her hand. “You don’t mean that.” Mercy said. “The pancakes and syrup are delicious.” Ms. Warburton said. “Thank you.” Mercy replied. “Imagine that on Christmas, Mother’s Day, and your birthday that no one calls and no one sends you a card, not one god damned person could give a shit whether you were alive or dead, imagine that!” Ms. Warburton said raising her voice to a crescendo at the end of her rant.
